Come in, and I’ll show you around. This autumn home tour begins on our front step and winds through to a harvest dinner in the garden at the end.
We live in a five-level split, so you’ll climb a few staircases along the way. Every room leans cottage-inspired, so it feels warm, cozy, and lived in. Each stop below has a quick look and a link to the full post.

The tour begins where every visit does, at the front door. Tall drop-cloth pumpkin topiaries I made myself anchor the steps, now in their sixth autumn, and mums, grasses and purple millet fill in below. This year, I tucked faded hydrangea blooms from my summer urns around the pumpkin bases.

Our sunken front entrance is the first room you see, so it gets a warm welcome. White wire cloches and an old iron window grate frame the space above the closet. Handmade pumpkins fill the entry dresser, and a garden bench my husband built from old elevator wood waits by the door.

Just beyond the entrance, the living room leans into deep brown, rust, soft green and a little blue. An old window from my grandparents’ farm hangs behind the sofa, and this fall it finally got a wreath. A swan arrangement sits on the coffee table, with pillows and throws close by for curling up with.

The Dining Room, Set with Family HistoryThe dining table belonged to my great-grandma, and my grandma once cut all of her fabric on it. For autumn, it’s set as though company might drop by, with my grandma’s china cabinet nearby. Even the small canisters have a job here, serving as butter dishes and pickle jars.

The kitchen is where autumn gets hands-on. Vintage finds, thrifted frames, and two little geese I painted for my grandpa sit above the cupboards. In the baking nook, my collections show how one corner can change with the pieces you use every day. A lamp glows in the coffee corner on early mornings.

Down in the family room, a fire is going most evenings from September through May. The old hutch came from my husband’s family, out of a coal cellar, and a vintage lamp my husband bought me glows beside the fireplace. It’s the room where we really live.

Even the guest bathroom gets a little autumn. A refinished family dresser makes the vanity, and Magnolia canisters hold the bath salts and cotton balls. Two ducks in rust bow ties sit by the sink, and candles wait beside the tub for a relaxing evening bubble bath.

Small pieces tie these rooms together. Old books wear velvet ribbon, brass duck bookends hold them up, and a lamp base has become a fall vase. A tin tile sat in the dining room last year, and now it sits above the kitchen cupboards. The furniture is only the bones, and these are the pieces that finish the story.

The tour ends outside, under our apple tree. A buffet built across the raised lettuce bed holds a pear and brie-stuffed pork tenderloin, roasted tomato soup in a pumpkin tureen, and sage bread baked in terracotta flowerpots. Lights glow overhead as the evening cools.

That’s the whole autumn home tour, from the front step to the garden. Every room here leans cottage-inspired, which for me means warm, cozy, and a little time-worn, with a story in the pieces. It’s cottage living, in the city. Start with whichever room you like, or take the tour from the top. I hope something in it helps your own home feel a little more like autumn.
