Autumn Family Room Decor: A Cozy, Collected Space for Everyday Living

Autumn in the Family Room: A Cozy, Collected Space

Autumn family room decor looks a little different in our house, because this is the room we really live in. It’s where we watch movies, sit by the fire, drink our morning coffee, and have our devotions. It’s also where Smokey and Bandit spend most of their time, even though I moved their beds out of the way for these photos.

This room doesn’t stay perfectly styled. Smokey is determined to steal the small velvet pumpkins. That means the display under the TV is always on the move. I take it away. When I think she’s forgotten about it, I put it back. She seems to think I put it back just for her, and then it’s moved again.

It’s where we gather and settle in at the end of the day. So for fall, I wanted it to feel warm and welcoming without taking away the comfort that makes us use it so much. For reference, we live in a five-level split, and the family room is above ground.

Decorating the Family Room for Autumn

This year, I brought in fall with pumpkins, flowers, old books, and a few warm ribbons. I’ve collected most of these pieces over the years. I move things from room to room every season. That gives me something different without buying new all the time. Thrifting and garage sales help too. I always find pieces that fit my autumn decor perfectly.

The built-in shelves were an easy place to add seasonal colour. I tied a few old books together with velvet ribbon, added a twig pumpkin, and brought in some of my geese. Changing the artwork on the Frame TV finished things off without adding anything else to the room.

The new washable rug ties it all together. I used the same one in the living room and dining room, with a matching runner in the kitchen. They’ve been such a practical addition that I’m sharing more about them in a separate post.

An Old Family Hutch with a Story

The antique hutch sits at the bottom of the stairs as you walk into the family room. It came from my husband’s family. We dug it out of an old coal cellar years ago.

After we brought it home, we cleaned it up, and my husband refinished it. He also built the doors, so they aren’t original. I still haven’t found the right handles, but I’m watching for something that looks like it has always belonged there.

Someday I’ll refinish it again. There’s a heavy layer of lacquer to sand off first, so that project will wait until I’m ready for the mess.

For now, it makes a great backdrop for an autumn arrangement. Fabric pumpkins, flowers, vintage books, and brass candlesticks all sit on top.

The Red Mill painting above it is one I painted myself. Many years ago, I took a class from Dorothy Dent, and I’ve painted several of her paintings since. I change them out with the seasons. The autumn colours in this one seem made for this room.

A Fireplace We Really Use

Our wood-burning fireplace isn’t just for looks. We use it to help heat the house from about September through May. Sometimes we light it on a cool summer morning & evening too.

It isn’t the prettiest part of the room right now. I plan to paint it before I decorate for Christmas. I’m thinking a warm wash, something like a German schmear. Even so, it’s part of our everyday life. A fire is often burning while we watch a movie, visit, or spend a slow morning at home.

I layered the autumn decor around it with pieces I’ve collected over the years. A large arrangement, an old trunk, a rooster, and a few other finds add colour beside the stone without competing with it.

A vintage lamp sits between the fireplace and the TV. We found it thrifting one day, and my husband bought it for me. It has lived in the family room ever since. Sometimes it moves to the other side of the fireplace, but it looks absolutely perfect right here.

The Carpet Sweeper That Reminds Me of Grandma

One of my newest finds is the old carpet sweeper beside the hutch. I spotted it at Timeworn Charm in Lacombe and left it behind the first time. I kept thinking about it, so I went back, and it was still there.

It reminds me of my grandma, who always used a carpet sweeper in the front entry of her farmhouse. This one still works, which makes me love it even more.

It’s a simple old piece. Still, the simple ones often make a room feel the most personal. It belongs here because it carries a memory.

A Room Made for Real Life

As the weather cools, this is where morning coffee and devotions will move. It’s where the dogs curl up, the fire keeps the house warm, and everyone finds a comfortable seat.

The fall decorations make it feel ready for the season. But the stories behind the pieces are what make it feel like home.

A Few Easy Ideas to Try

  • Change the artwork on your television to bring in seasonal colour.
  • Tie old books together with velvet ribbon and add a small stem.
  • Fill a tray with fabric pumpkins, flowers, and pieces you already own.
  • Add autumn branches to a favourite vase instead of replacing the whole arrangement.
  • Bring out old pieces that hold a memory and let them become part of the room.
