How to Create Charming Summer Decor with Milk Paint and Floating Techniques

I have a detailed YouTube tutorial walking you through the process step by step, plus tips to help you succeed. But here’s some insight into the techniques before you begin:

Your Fresh Blooms DIY Kit Wood Pieces

All of our wood kits are laser cut with a diode laser, therefore, you will get a little “charring” on the sides and it may rub off on your fingers. You can easily wipe the sides of your wood pieces with a rag or baby wipes. Also, you will have the option of covering this up with paint or stain or sealing to make sure it doesn’t rub off after your piece is finished.

Milk Paint Layering for a Vintage, Farmhouse Look

Milk paint creates a beautifully aged, timeworn effect, perfect for cottage-style decor:

  • Mix the milk paint as follows: I recommend a 2:1 ratio—two parts milk paint to one part water—mixed well, but still allowing for some of the powder to be gritty.
  • Wax areas where you want a crackle or chipping effect by rubbing a candle over the surface.
  • Apply the first coat and then use a heat gun or dryer to help create cracks as it dries.
  • Distress the surface lightly with sandpaper or a scraper to reveal underlying layers, adding depth.
  • Repeat the process with a second coat for a rich, layered appearance.

Adding Dimension With the Floating Painting Technique

Floating is a method that gives flowers realistic shading and soft highlights.

  • Dip the corner of a damp brush into a small amount of paint, then blend it on your palette so the color fades gently toward the other side of the brush.
  • Apply the brush to the edges of petals or leaves, using light strokes to create soft shadows or subtle highlights.
  • Practice on a scrap piece first to perfect your pressure and blending.

This technique helps you create soft shadows & highlights, adding a natural, watercolor-like look to your floral details.

Tips for First-Time Crafters

  • Keep brushes slightly damp for easier blending with floating techniques.
  • Allow each paint layer to dry before adding another for best results.
  • Don’t worry about perfection—handmade charm is all about creative expression.
