It’s that time of year again to decorate our front steps for fall! Well, I might not be quite ready to put the fall on the front steps because the flowers are still blooming beautifully here. So I thought I would come to you with some fall front step decor ideas from the last two years.
One of the things it doesn’t change on my front step is my DIY dropcloth pumpkin topiaries that I made back in 2020. I guess I shouldn’t say they don’t change I have change them up a smidge over the last couple years by adding different florals and tags to them. But they are still the focal point of my front step. What changes is the rest of the decor, I love to add fresh mums to my front step, but they are looking a little tired and sad, because I kind of forgot about them while they were in the backyard waiting to be put on the front step. So the next year I decided to use faux flowers and leaves from my stash that I wasn’t using inside anymore. This work 12 because any didn’t have to worry about hauling them in when it was calling for frost.
I firmly believe you cannot have too many pumpkins when you were decorating for fall! 🙂 I have been collecting pumpkins in many shapes and sizes over the years, and I just paint them to match my decor. One year I painted my real pumpkins, and it turned out well, but you can only leave them out so long because they freeze and then they don’t look so good. Plus you have to buy them again every year. This way, I may have to store all these pumpkins from year to year but I save money. And if my decor changes, then I will just repaint them.
Here I took some apple crates and painted them, layed them on their sides, and let the pumpkin spill out, mixed with sunflowers and leaves. I also fit pumpkins in and around the bottom of my urns, and beside the apple crates. Then I finished it off with some more faux leaves, sunflowers and pinecones. I always use lanterns on the front step. It seems, and then I just change them out for the seasons. This was last year’s front step, and I filled them with some wooden pumpkin and leaf cutouts that I had silkscreened on.
The year before, as I was stating above I had pumpkins dispersed between fall moms and I did leave some ivy and geraniums on the front step for a while as well. I love the full look of the pumpkins and flowers cascading down the steps.
I liked At the bottom of my stairs I have had an old wooden chair for a few years now. This year I was able to leave some Bacopa and liquorice plant as well as one of my ferns out in front as we had a beautiful long fall. So it just popped in a pumpkin and a couple full leaves and a little fall sign to finish it off.
I had left my fall decorating a little late last year, so I couldn’t leave any of my plants out. So the chair got the same sign and a basket full of faux fall florals and pumpkins. This is the last year for the chair out there as you can see it’s getting a little bit to weathered outside. I have since brought it into the house and will use it someplace else.
I was saying at the beginning of this post, I made these pumpkin topiaries at a drop cloth back in 2020. They are holding up great, and I will use them for years to come! You can easily change out the florals on them, and the tags to give them a little bit of a refresh. When I first made them, I had black urns, and then I got another set of urns and painted them white for a different look. I’m thinking that I may paint up another set that I have stashed in my backyard in a dark charcoal or a brown colour with a little bit of rust & chippy paint. So we will see if I can get that done this year or if that waits till next year.
I have made a YouTube video with a detailed tutorial on how to make these topiary pumpkins. It will be posted below. There is also a blog post you can refer to as well.
I change out the harvest sign above my willow Reese seasonally. This is made out of a 2 x 10, it is super heavy, but it doesn’t get tossed around by the wind. In the big sign that my willow wreath is hanging on, has been there for a few years, and is slowly starting to age a bit. I change the bow seasonally to freshen it up. You also may have noticed my mailbox, I change the insert out and it’s seasonally as well. I painted those inserts probably 20 years ago, and I am still using them!
I have kept the same door hanger for a couple years now. It is a round piece I silk screened and added a bow and florals too. One of these days that front door is going to get a makeover as well. 🙂
