Let’s make some DIY drop cloth fabric hearts! Today’s DIY is not only for Valentine’s Day, they are perfect to use through the spring and summer as well!
As I mentioned above these DIY drop cloth fabric hearts can work for any season. There are three different sets and I made the double sided to give you lots of ideas. Mine are sewn, but you could hot glue them if you would like. They are made to hang, however you could leave that part out and they could sit on a coffee table in a tray. Even if you add the yarn to make them hanging, they can still be placed for decor instead of hung. I will share a few examples below, so you have ideas how to decorate with them. As I transition into decorating for spring, I will share how I’m using them in other areas of my home to decorate in another post featuring spring decor. So be sure to watch for it.
As you guessed, from the title, we will be using drop cloth. You don’t have to use dropcloth. You may choose a completely different coloured fabric, a cream, canvas, type fabric, or something completely different. I, bleach, my drop cloth, as I mention in the video below. This helps to lighten the colour and soften it. Once I bleach it, I put it into the wash machine and wash it and then dry it. You may be wondering what process is for bleaching. I have a giant Rubbermaid container that I will put in my garage or outside if it’s nice out, fill it with water and a jug of bleach and immerse my drop cloth into it for about 10 hours. Then I transfer it to the washing machine and then dry. Cutting the drop cloth in half so it is more manageable.

I will give a brief description on how I made the drop cloth fabric hearts. You can refer to the video posted below for full details.
I started by tracing out the hearts on the drop cloth. The hearts that I chalked the pattern right onto the fabric heart, I did that first, using the Chalk Couture Silk Screens, and Chalk Paste before I sewed them together.
Next, I inserted, yarn or jute that I am using to hang my hearts, at the top in the middle of the heart. I sewed around the hearts, leaving an opening at the bottom to stuff. Once stuffed, I sewed closed. Then I used my finger to fray the edges.
Now that the hearts are sewn together, you can add beads to the yarn you are hanging them with, decorate your tags, add patches with words & designs on them by silk screening, and finally add the bows.
One of the great things about making your own DIY drop cloth fabric hearts, is that you get to customize the colours and pattern to fit in your decor! You can even change up the tag and have it say something else. Whatever you decide these hearts will be apart of your Valentines or Spring & Summer decor for years to come.
