A Simple Christmas Update: Decorating with Pillows

Sometimes the simplest change makes the biggest difference. If you’re looking for an easy way to refresh your home this season, decorating with Christmas pillows is one of my favourite starting points. A few soft layers, a touch of texture, and a meaningful design or two can bring warmth and joy to any space — without a full room makeover.

Start with What You Have

You don’t need to start from scratch to create a festive, cozy look. Begin by layering your everyday pillows with seasonal favourites.
Soft plaids, faux fur, velvety textures, and scriptural designs mix beautifully together. I love how a pillow like “Hope Has Come” feels right at home beside everyday patterns and cozy throws.

Add Colour and Meaning

I love decorating with a soft palette of mixed blues, greens,  white and ivory for Christmas. These hues blend naturally with my everyday decor while adding just enough seasonal charm.
Faith-inspired pillows like “Emmanuel”, For Unto Us a Child Is Born”, and “O Come Let Us Adore Him” remind me of the reason behind the celebration — and their watercolour wreaths fit seamlessly into both traditional and cottage-style rooms.

Cozy Corners Made Simple

Even one or two pillows can transform a quiet corner into a welcoming spot. Try placing a lumbar pillow in a woven basket beside a chair, or layer a few on a bench in your entryway.
It’s an easy way to add warmth without rearranging furniture or unpacking decor boxes. This is one of my favourite ways to add pillows to my Christmas decor. You can see in the photos below how it has changed over the years.

Mix and Match Collections

Over the years, I’ve designed several Christmas pillow collections — each with its own personality and colour story.

Each collection pairs beautifully, so you can mix designs year to year and still create a cohesive look throughout your home.

Quality You Can Feel

Every pillow cover I sell is hand-sewn, made with care and comfort in mind. The snap-closure backs mean no fighting with zippers, and the covers wash beautifully.
I toss mine in on a gentle cycle and tumble dry low — they come out soft and fresh every time.

Because they’re sold as covers, you can reuse the inserts you already have. It keeps decorating simple and makes storage easy — just remove the covers, fold them up, and tuck them away until next year. No bulky pillows to store!

Most designs come in soft white velveteen or oatmeal suede. Square covers measure 18×18 inches (best with a 20×20 insert), and lumbar styles are about 11½x19 inches (fit a 12×20 insert). I also offer inserts for anyone who prefers a ready-to-use option.

Create Your Own Christmas Pillows

If you love a good DIY project, making your own Christmas pillows is a wonderful, budget-friendly way to decorate. Some of my favourite pieces — like the “Let’s Get Cozy” navy velvet pillow with gold lettering, the music note designs, the reindeer pillow and the little turquoise star pillow on my chair — were handmade using Chalk Couture silk-screen transfers.

Even though I don’t have a full tutorial up yet, creating a simple envelope-style pillow cover and inking a design on it is easy. It’s a fun way to personalize your decor while keeping things affordable. Plus, you can reuse them year after year — I still use mine every Christmas!

I’m planning to make a few new small throw pillows using a snowflake silk screen as soon as it arrives. I’ll be sharing a full tutorial soon — from sewing the pillow cover to inking the fabric — so be sure to watch for that in the next couple of weeks. In the meantime, if you’d like to grab the same transfer I’ll be using, you can find it here.

These particular transfers are no longer available, but there are many beautiful designs to choose from here.
