I don’t know about you, but when I think about adding extra seasonal wall art or cute farmhouse signs to my decor, one of the first things I think about is where am I going to store that?! You can only have so many home decor accessories to store. Do I have the solution for you! Double sided signs & wall art!
One of my favourite things about making double sided signs and wall art, is you don’t have to store as many seasonal items. You just turn them around!
This is also fabulous if you just want to freshen up your space with a different look and you don’t want to get rid of your current signs or wall art. Next time you turn them around they will feel brand new again!
I will start with a few examples to inspire you how to use them in your space. Then I will give you more details below and show you how I pull it all together.
This actually applies to any large signs or wall art in your home. For this example I will share how I change up my signs above the kitchen cupboards to give it a whole new look and freshen it up. I always wanted a large Christmas tree farm sign above my kitchen cupboards, of course at Christmas time. Storing many large signs to change out for the seasons would be very cumbersome, so it only makes sense to flip it and make it double sided!
The second side is one of my favourites! A “Fresh Flower Market” sign. I have had this idea in my head for so long, and it turned out perfectly! In Fact it has inspired one of my new Summer Collections coming soon (Late May 2022) in my shop! So keep checking back for it!
I will leave this sign up for both spring and summer, but then when I want to change something out for fall it only requires storing one item instead of two or three. Keep your eye open for the fall collection launching late summer to see what I come up with for that sign.
When you are placing small decor signs on a coffee table tray, the great thing about it being double sided, is you see from both sides!
This tip isn’t really about saving space, but just a functional and pleasing way to display a sign on your coffee table. This really applies to anywhere in a home where you can see the back side of the sign. For example, a tiered tray sitting on a kitchen island.
In the examples below, you can see how I decorate my front entry table with a sign at Christmas time and in the Spring. I would then store only one sign and bring another one out for summer, then flip it around for Fall.
The next example shows a Welcome sign horizontally, and then you can flip it around and use it someplace else in the house vertically.
One more great idea for entryway welcome sign, is bringing the porch signs indoors. These are also known as “Porch Leaner Signs”. To me this is a no-brainer to have as a double sided sign. 🙂
Since we were on the topic of porch signs, let’s actually talk about them outside.
First thing to consider when you’re placing any sign outside, is making sure it is sealed for the weather. Now even though you seal it for the weather, I advise only putting it in a sheltered area. You do not want constant sun and rain on your sign. I have tested it out in full sun and rain and it does hold up pretty good, but it will fade over time.
Some of my porch leaners are actually horizontal and I hang them on the side of my house. We have a very small front step so I don’t have a lot of extra room to have them vertical on the step.
Now, don’t forget about your backyard. I have one of my double sided porch leaners hanging securely on the wall on our back deck. I love how having those colourful sign adds a little bit of cheerfulness and whimsy to the backyard.
Adding small decor signs add a little variety when you are decorating for different seasons. You can add them to tiered trays, the top of kitchen cupboards, shelves, coffee table trays as we chatted about above and many more places.
If you change up your colours for different seasons, you can have the exact same saying on both sides but in different colors. So for example I’ll decorate with a lot of navy at Christmas time, but in the spring I like to have soft pinks and eucalyptus colors. In the summer I throw in a splash of a pastel lemon color. Then in the fall I change it up again with coppers and rust colors.
You may be wondering how I hang my signs and not show the sign hangers when I turn it around. Well I don’t use sign hangers. Unless I put two eyes in the top and hung it on chain rope or jute. But otherwise the frame is used as a way to hang the sign. Just simply saying the frame on the nail.
As I release my seasonal collections you will be able to shop them in my store and get lots of inspiration! I’m going to make it really easy for you to select the sides that you want on each of your double sided signs. 🙂
